C368 American Indian Headresses

On August 8, 2013, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues five new stamps featuring American Indian Headdresses. Much more than an elaborate adornment, the Indian headdress also told much about its owner. Certain feathers might represent particularly courageous battlefield coups. Spots of red paint on a feather often symbolized the manner in which an enemy was defeated. And, always, the headdress reflected the animals and birds native to the tribe's home. Some elements of the headdress, however, were never revealed. They remain tribal secrets to this day. The headdress is the most widely recognized symbol of the Indian way of life. As with many American Indian traditions, the origin of the headdress is lost in the mists of time and shrouded by tribal secrecy. But most agree that the elaborate, feathered headdress loosely associated with all American Indians was the invention of the Sioux, the proud warriors of the open plains.
