The 2012 World War II 70th Anniversary: 1942 Issue commemorates ten key events and important aspects of the year 1942 relating to World War II: the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, which boosted American morale; the rationing effort in the United States, which helped curb inflation; the Battle of the Coral Sea, the first battle where neither naval opponent came within sight of the other; the Japanese invasions of Corregidor and later the Aleutian Islands; the American codebreaking effort which helped win the Battle of Midway and turn the tide of war in the Pacific; the American victory at Midway despite the loss of the carrier Yorktown; the entrance of women into industry to help the war effort; the battle for the Solomon Islands; and the Allied invasion of North Africa.
