On April 8, 2012, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues four new stamps featuring Tobolar Coconut Tree Ropes and Twine. The coconut palm tree is the most extensively used plant growing on atolls. Every part of it can be used for some purpose, including for food, medicines, implements or building materials. These Marshall Islands stamps depict the traditional method of making rope and twine from the nuts of the coconut tree. The first stamp shows the husking of the ripe nuts. The second stamp shows the process of soaking the fresh husks in seawater, which are kept secured in place with stones and coconut leaf mats for three to four months. The third stamp shows the process of pounding the husks to separate the meat from the twine, which is then dried under the sun. The fourth stamp shows the art of making ropeby rolling the fibers on the thigh.
