On August 21, 2011, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued five new stamps comprising the fourth Issue in its ongoing five-part Firsts in Flight Series. In March of 1965, the U.S.S.R. announced its intention to build a brand new kind of passenger aircraft. At the Paris Salon Aeronautique, a model of the proposed design was unveiled: the plane would be supersonic, capable of flying faster than the speed of sound. Remarkably, the design of the Russians' Tu-144 was strikingly similar to another prototype called the Concorde, the product of a collaborative effort between France and Great Britain. The designer of this sleek, delta-winged Russian craft was Professor Alexei A. Tupolev, the son of Andrei N. Tupolev, a man often referred to as the father of Russian aviation. On the last day of 1968, the supersonic Russian prototype, known as the Charger, made its maiden flight, becoming the first supersonic transport aircraft to fly.
