"...it is in the interest of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes." So states the preamble to the Antarctic Treaty which entered into force in 1961: a historic document which reserved the entire continent for nonpolitical scientific use. Antarctica stirred little exploratory interest until the 18th century. Eager to lay territorial claim, seven nations eventually decreed sovereignty over pie-shaped spheres of influence. In the 1950s, the scientific community coordinated effortsto establish an International Geophysical Year, and participating nations agreed to cast politics aside for universal scientific gain. This success led to a U.S.proposal for an international treaty guaranteeing Antarctica's free status. The governments of 12 nations ratified the treaty, and 5 more eventually acceded as well.
