On February 18, 2011, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued five new stamps featuring Firsts in Flight. These stamps are the first Issue in a five-part Series celebrating Firsts in Flight. In the early 1900s, a famous English automobile manufacturer--Sir Walter Windham--decided to give up his motor business and "establish a flying industry." He booked a trip to India, taking with him the famous French pilot, Henri Pequet. While staying in Allahadbad, India, Windham met a chaplain who was trying to raise funds for a new hostel. Windham developed an ingenious plan that made this possible. The United Provinces Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition was planned for 1911, and Windham inaugurated an airmail service during the exhibition, charging visitors a modest fee to post a letter for the first-ever airmail flight. With at least one million people watching, Pequet took off in his Sommer-type biplane on February 18. He carried some 6,500 letters and cards, each canceled with a special postmark created by Windham.
