| C311 125th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty Issue
Date: June 17, 2010 On June 17, 2010, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued nine new stamps honoring the Statue of
Liberty. On June 17, 1885, the French vessel "Isere" arrived in New York with the 300 copper pieces which would form the Statue of Liberty. Designed by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi,
the statue was a gift from France, a token of friendship between the two nations. Construction of the statue took place in the workshop of Gaget, Gauthier and Company on Chazelle Street in
Paris. The statue's design incorporates several symbolic elements: a broken chain at her feet represents freedom from tyranny; a tablet held in her left arm is inscribed with the date of
America's independence; the points on her crown represent the seven seas and the seven continents; and, in her right hand, a torch is held high as a beacon of freedom and democracy. A colossal
monument, the statue contains some 100 tons of copper, while the steel skeleton alone weighs over 125 tons. TECHNICAL DATA Issue: Statue of LibertyFace
