On July 22, 2009, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued 3 new stamps to celebrate the solar eclipse that occurred that very same day. Records of solar eclipses date back thousands of years, their careful archiving a testament to humankind's utter fascination with one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring of celestial phenomena. In additional to being relatively rare, solar eclipses are also quite brief: under the best circumstances, a total solareclipse can last barely upwards of seven minutes and be viewed along a track just over 150 miles wide. Because the apparent size of the Moon as viewed from Earth is almost exactly the same as the apparent size of the Sun, the Moon is able to almost perfectly cover the Sun during a solar eclipse. The three stamps in this special issue commemorate the solar eclipse that took place in the Republic of the Marshall Islands on July 22, 2009.
