On July 13, 2009, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued 5 new stamps featuring beautiful Hot Air Balloons to commemorate the 225th Anniversary of the first balloon ascent in England. The art of Ballooning is truly the oldest kind of flying known to humankind. A typical hot air balloon flight begins with the big balloon envelope being laid out, downward of the gondola. After a careful inspection of the whole airship, the narrow neck of the balloon is opened and fiery-hot air is forced into the gigantic envelope. The huge, lifeless thing suddenly begins to take shape, and soon the brightly colored envelope contains enough hot air to lift itself and its passenger high into the sky, where the noises of civilization fall away and the soothing sounds of flowing breezes are company enough for anyone. These vibrant stamps celebrate the 225th Anniversary of the first balloon ascent in England.
