On June 18, 2009, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues five new stamps featuring the five most recent winners of the United Kingdom's annual Rose of the Year contest. Today, after many years of hybridization, thousands of different roses exist throughout the world. From pure white to deep purple, these popular flowers are available in virtually every color imaginable. Roses are also grown in an array of forms. Some garden varieties are trained to climb up a trellis, while others become huge shrubs that can reach heights up to 15 feet. Commercially-cultivated roses, such as the long-stemmed beauties sold by the florist trade, are coaxed to grow on long straight stalks by using a type of string web that keeps the flower stems from curving. In addition to their decorative uses, some types of roses bear fruit known as "hips" that are used to make teas and jellies. And the oils extracted from rose petals are turned into perfumes.
