On April 28, 2009, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued 16 new stamps honoring some of America's most important Military Heroes of the Air. The 16 stamps in this historic issue honor some of the true giants in America's century-long history of military aviation. From William "Billy" Mitchell, considered the father of the United States Air Force, and Curtis E. LeMay, one of the fundamental shapers of Strategic Air Command ... to Charles "Chuck" Yeager, the first person in history to fly faster than the speed of sound, and James "Jimmy" Doolittle, whose famous and extremely daring bombing raid on Tokyo during World War II scored a monumental propaganda victory for Allied forces ...the 15 men honored in this stamp issue personify the leadership, courage and determination which helped make the United States the world's premier air power.
