On April 14, 2009, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued four new stamps honoring the 100th Anniversary of Robert Peary's expedition to the North Pole. In 1908, after several unsuccessful attempts, explorer Robert Peary and his trusted assistant Matthew Henson embarked on what they knew would be their last attempt at reaching the North Pole. Accompanied by numerous well-equipped and well-trained Eskimos, Peary and Henson led a party of 24 men, 19 sleds and 133 dogs northward from Cape Columbia. Toward the end of March 1909, Peary's previous northern record --87'6'N-- was broken when the expedition reached the 88th parallel. On April 6, 1909, Peary and Henson finally reached their goal. With a party of four Eskimos, they hiked the last three miles to the 90th parallel -- the North Pole was finally conquered!
