On April 7, 2009, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues four new stamps honoring the Bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln. Perhaps the most revered figure in American history, Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky, on February 12, 1809. A self-taught lawyer, he began practicing law in Springfield, Illinois, earning the nickname "Honest Abe" for his integrity. Having served as an Illinois State Legislator and U.S. Congressman, he was inaugurated 16th President of the United States on March 4, 1861. Little more than a month later, the Civil War began. Lincoln presided over the United States during its most tumultuous and critical period, successfully preserving the Union and emancipating the slaves. On April 14, 1865, just five days after the Civil War ended, Lincoln was shot by a Southern sympathizer. He is remembered as the Great Emancipator and considered one of America's greatest presidents.
