On March 31, 2009, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued 25 new stamps featuring colorful Bouquets of the World, with artwork by famed artists Leonora Box and Kristin Rosenberg. "Habits and customs differ, but all people have the love of flowers in common." Taken from an old Chinese proverb, this simple sentiment fittingly conveys the enduring popularity flowers have held throughout the ages and across the globe. Steeped in symbolism, floral tributes are presented during almost every stage of life: from welcoming a newborn baby to comforting a grieving family, they are given and received by people everywhere. Yet it is perhaps the humble gardener who feels the strongest bond with these delightful plants. Hours spent patiently tilling soil, carefully sowing seeds in the ground and painstakingly tending to the fragile new life after it emerges from the earth provide a special sense of satisfaction like no other. As President Thomas Jefferson once said, "But though an old man, I am but a young gardener."
