On December 10, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues a historic new stamp commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the first U.S. Airmail stamp. Created by designer D. Zoe Seemel, the souvenir sheet for this stamp celebrates the issuance of the first U.S. Airmail stamp in 1918. Three years after the first stamp's appearance, the U.S. Post Office proved the feasibility of coast-to-coast airmail flights, and visionaries began planning a system of round-the-clock delivery. The key was a system to literally light up the country from New York to San Francisco, with acetylene gas beacons at three mile intervals, emergency landing fields with rotating beacons mounted on 50-foot towers and regular landing fields with large beacon lights. On July 1, 1924, a test of the night-flying route began. Twenty-one pilots took part, flying in relays. Fresh pilots and planes took over in Cleveland, OH; Chicago, IL; Omaha, NE; Cheyenne, WY; Salt Lake City, UT and Reno, NV, and day and night flights arrived on both coasts the next day. With them came permanent coast-to-coast airmail service.
