On October 15, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued eight new Christmas stamps. Featuring artwork by acclaimed artist Barbara Brown, the stamps depict Christmas ornaments honoring eight beloved Christmas carols. Of all the joyous traditions associated with the holidays, perhaps none is more cherished than the custom of singing carols at Christmas. Interestingly, this celebrated holiday practice has its roots in pagan customs in practice before the eleventh century. It took centuries for the carol to evolve from a pagan rite of fertility into a beloved Christmas pastime sanctioned by the Church. In the 21st century, the custom of singing carols continues to be a favorite way to spread "season's greetings" throughout many nations. Many a family spends a coldwinter's night before Christmas strolling through their neighborhood and joyously serenading friends with standards such as Silent Night and Joy to the World, a Christmas tradition that grows more precious with each passing year.
