On August 19, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued 6 new stamps featuring Endangered Species, with artwork by renowned wildlife artist Chuck Ripper. The Blue Whale, the Amazonian Manatee, the Hawaiian Monk Seal, the Green Turtle,the Giant Clam and the Killer Whale ... all these creatures of the sea share onecommon characteristic -- all teeter on the brink of extinction and may vanish from the face of the Earth in our lifetime. They are not alone. Each year, the list of endangered species gets longer as more wild animals fall victim to pollution, poaching and habitat destruction. But hope shines on the horizon. Mankind has at last awakened to the vital role each of these species plays in the environmental health of our planet. With international effort and cooperation, perhaps the term "endangered species" will itself pass into extinction, allowing future generations to share the world with all of Mother Nature's beautiful creatures.
