C278 Portraits of the Wild West
Issue Date: August 14, 2008
On August 14, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued 16 new stamps featuring Portraits of the Wild West. The character of
the Wild West was molded by a wide variety of rugged individuals: trappers, traders, cowboys, prospectors, explorers, showmen and, of course, Native Americans. The first white settlers bought
cattle from the Mexicans in Texas, driving the herds northward across the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains. They built ranches, put down roots and made the land productive. For the most part,
they were tough, single-minded business people on horseback who knew how to survive in an isolated, inhospitable region that offered only wild prairie grass and the occasional free-flowing
stream. They learned how to cope with solitude, failure and backbreaking toil, while battling the hazards of nature and each other. Some survived and some didn't. But many of those who did
became legendary. Featuring artwork by world-renowned artist Chris Calle, the stamps depict 16 of the most famous characters from the bygone days of the American Wild West.
