On July 20, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues five new stamps featuring Fishing Flies. Although artificial flies for fishing have been used since approximately A.D. 200, until relatively recently they were employed for food gathering only. In the latter half of the 19th century, however, top-hatted gentlemen raised the craft of fly-tying to an admired art form, making it "respectable" to catch fish merely for sport or leisure. Since then, artificial flies have seen tremendous evolution in popularity, spawning tens of thousands of intricate designs. Once used almost exclusively for trout and Atlantic salmon, flies have now been tied and used successfully for almost all sporting species. Today, much simpler flies have replaced the complicated, expensive ones of yore. Yet the original ties to a fanciful past remain, displayed in airtight cases befitting their status as true works of 19th-century art. Featuring artwork by acclaimed wildlife artist Don Balke, the stamps show five fishing flies: Lefty's Deceiver, the Apte Tarpon, the Royal Wulff, the Muddler Minnow and the Jock Scott.
