On June 3, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues 25 new stamps featuring Colorful Birds of the World. Birds have long fascinated man, with their beautiful plumage, delightful songs and ability to fly. Every diverse topography--from lowlands and coastal highlands to lakes, bogs, fields and forests--are home to many colorful bird species. The Marshall Islands are among the easternmost points of land in the Central Pacific Ocean and, consequently, some of the most remote. Their closest neighbors are New Guinea, Indonesia and Australia--all located thousands of miles away. The typhoons that frequent the Central Pacific certainly have been responsible for carrying birds to the region. The truly oceanic birds living in the islands--terns, frigates, albatross, petrels and boobies--would not have found the great distances an obstacle, and probably discovered the Marshalls on long journeys seeking food and land. Featuring artwork by renowned Hungarian artist Pal Varga, the stamps show 25 of the world's most beautiful birds.
