C274 Great Marine Heroes
Issue Date: May 12, 2008
On May 12, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues 10 new stamps paying tribute to Great Marine Heroes of the United States. On November 10, 1775, the
Continental Congress established the Marine Corps. The Marines made their first landing the following year, storming the Bahama Islands during the Revolutionary War. On July 11, 1798, the Marine
Corps was reorganized as a separate service within the U.S. Navy. In 1834, Congress gave the president authority to order Marines to duty with the Army. In 1913, the Marine Corps established its
aviation section. During World War II, Marines launched the first offensive action against the Japanese at Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942. Usually the first to go into battle, Marines have served
in every U.S. war as well as every major U.S. naval action. Today, the Marine Corps stands ready for integrated land-sea-air combat anywhere at any time. Featuring artwork by world renowned
artist Howard Koslow, the stamps honor eight legendary Marines and commemorate two of the United States Marine Corps' proudest moments during World War II: the liberation of the Marshall Islands
and the raising of the American Flag on Iwo Jima.
