C273 Constellations I Issue Date: April 29, 2008 On April 29, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued 20 new stamps celebrating Constellations. More than half of the constellations officially recognized today were
first identified in ancient times, while most of the remaining 40 that are now accepted were added by European astronomers in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the International Astronomical
Union (IAU)--founded in 1919--recognizes 88 official constellations, each one with its own precisely defined boundaries so that every star in the sky can be assigned to one of these
constellations. These boundaries are a mix of the ancient Greek patterns recorded by Ptolemy and later patterns observed by more modern astronomers. In 1922 at a meeting in Rome, the IAU adopted
standard three-letter abbreviations for every constellation; for instance, "And" for Andromeda, "LMi" for Leo Minor and "CrB" for Corona Borealis. Featuring artwork by acclaimed Austrian artist
Fritz Wegner, the stamps show twenty of the most fascinating constellations in the sky. TECHNICAL DATA Issue: ConstellationsFace Value: 20 x $0.41
