Boasting some 37 different species -- including the lion, tiger, cheetah, cougar, panther, jaguar, lynx, ocelot and serval -- cats are native to most of the planet, with the exception of Australia and Antarctica, and occupy a wide variety of habitats. Some cats are patterned with spots, stripes or rosettes, while others are uniform in color. Except for the cheetah, these carnivorous mammals have sharp claws in their feet which can be retracted. Since cats are generally nocturnal, their large eyes are especially adapted for seeing in darkness. The fur of some of the larger cats, including some of the ones celebrated on this sheet of stamps, is sometimes highly coveted. Because of this demand, some rare cats are hunted and trapped illegally and in some cases are now threatened with extinction. Featuring artwork by acclaimed wildlife artist R.G. Finney, the stamp shows 12 stunning scenes of some of nature's most majestic felines.
