On July 30, 2007, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued a new stamp commemorating the 225th Anniversary of the Purple Heart. General George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit in 1782. Only three soldiers received this award during the Revolutionary War, after which it fell into disuse. On February 22, 1932 -- the bicentennial of Washington's birth -- the award was "revived out of respect to (Washington's) memory and military achievements", as ordered by the War Department. Thenceforth known as the Purple Heart, the decoration was initially awarded both for wounds received in action against the enemy and for meritorious service. By the end of World War II, however, its purpose was exclusively to recognize servicemembers wounded in action. Today, the Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in the world still in use and the first made available to the common soldier.
