R11 Marine Fishes of the Marshall Islands

On June 12, 2007, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued four new stamps featuring marine fishes. The stamp designs feature colorful photographs of four fish species indigenous to the Marshall Islands: Regal Angelfish, Saddled Butterflyfish, Tinker's Butterflyfish and Achilles Tang. The Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) can be recognized by its alternating yellow and black-edged white stripes. Favoring coral reefs and lagoons with abundant coral growth, it can often be found near caves and ledges. The Saddled Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium) has a large white-bordered black area below its dorsal fin, from which a filament extends. It can reach a length of over nine inches and inhabits rocky shores, coral reef slopes and outer reefs. Distinguished by its black body and bright orange spot, the Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles) can be found from Hawaii to Micronesia. It prefers the oxygen-rich waters in the shallow areas of coral reefs. Tinker's Butterflyfish (chaetodon tinkeri) is named for the biologist Spencer Willie Tinker, one-time director of the Waikiki Aquarium in Honolulu, Hawaii. Relatively rare, it can usually be found at depths of 150 feet or more.
