| C261 50th Anniversary of the Space Age Issue Date: June 12, 2007 On June 12, 2007, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued 10 new stamps to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Space Age. The
U.S.S.R. launched Sputnik 1 into orbit on October 4, 1957, creating the first man-made satellite and ushering in the Space Age. In the half-century since, the human race has dramatically
advanced its quest for the heavens with many other "firsts", including the first man in space (cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin) and the first men on the moon (astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin).
The stamp designs salute these important milestones, as well as the first docking in space (Apollo-Soyuz, the first joint flight of the U.S. and Soviet space programs), the first woman in space
(cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova), the first manned lunar vehicle (the Lunar Roving Vehicle used during the Apollo 15 moon mission), the first space walk (executed by cosmonaut Alexey Leonov),
the first landing on Mars (the Viking 1 Lander), the first probe of Venus (Venera 4) and the first American in orbit (astronaut John Glenn aboard Friendship 7). TECHNICAL
