On March 26, 2007, the Marshall Islands Postal Service will issue six new stamps featuring Railway Passenger Trains. With the development of the first steam locomotives in the 1800s, railway transportation soon became the most popular means of passenger travel in industrialized countries throughout the world. Most passenger locomotives at that time were steam powered, but by the mid-20th century, diesel-electric locomotives had replaced steam on most railroads. Many railway trains were designed with the comfort of the passenger in mind and included coaches with individual seats or benches, dining cars that provided meal service on long-distance routes, and sleepers that converted into beds for overnight travel. Modern "streamlined" passenger trains often featured drawing rooms and lounge cars as well. Designed by acclaimed artist J. Craig Thorpe, these colorful stamps depict six types of passenger trains: Art Deco Train, Pennsylvania, Santa Fe "Chief," Hiawatha, 20th Century Limited and Daylight.
