C254 Marshallese Culture IV
Issue Date: September 22, 2006
On September 22, 2006, the Marshall Islands Postal Service celebrates the heritage and culture of the Marshallese with new postage
stamps. This is the fourth set in the Marshallese Culture series.
Even as late as the early 1800s, Western civilization had not yet reached the Marshall Islands. Subsequently, the unique
culture and traditions of the Islanders remained virtually untouched by foreign influences. Over the course of many centuries, however, the proud and eminently resourceful Marshallese developed
a rich and fascinating culture that became apparent in their home-building, clothing styles, religious activities, canoe-construction and fishing methods -- just to name a few.
stamps are based on vintage photographs capturing the distinctive culture of the Marshallese, and include: Harbor Front of Jabwor, Jaluit Atoll (c.1901); Irooj with Family, Jabwor,
Jaluit Atoll (c.1901); Traditional Voyaging Canoe at Jaluit Atoll (c.1906); Mission Sisters and Girls Doing Laundry, Jaluit (c.1904); and Traditional House on Mile Atoll
