On July 26, 2005, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued five new stamps marking America's historic return to space following the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster on February 1, 2003.

On April 12, 1981, America launched its first space shuttle and ushered in an exciting, new era of space exploration. But the era of the space shuttle has not been without hardship or human sacrifice.

On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded just 73 seconds after liftoff due to a defect in the external solid rocket booster. Then on February 1, 2003, while returning from its 28th mission, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry. Despite these tragedies, America remained committed to space exploration.

NASA spent the next fifteen months making critical safety upgrades to the Space Shuttle Discovery, which was selected to be America's "Return to Flight" shuttle. After last minute safety delays, Discovery finally took to the skies on July 26, 2005, en route to the International Space Station.

During liftoff, pieces of foamy debris fell from Discovery's external fuel tank, a problem experts believe doomed Columbia in 2003. At the International Space Station, astronauts made minor repairs and carefully checked Discovery for serious external damage. On August 9, 2005, the Space Shuttle Discovery landed safely at Edwards Air Force Base in California, restoring America's pride in its space program.
