On June 26, 2005, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues new stamps commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations.

The charter establishing the United Nations was signed on June 26, 1945 and ratified October 24, 1945, shortly following the end of World War II. The name "United Nations" was coined in 1941 by U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt and first used officially on January 1, 1942, when 26 "peace-loving states" signed the Declaration by the United Nations, a document pledging their continued opposition to Axis Powers.

One of the largest peacekeeping and humanitarian organizations in history, the United Nations promotes international cooperation, peace, security, social equality and human rights. Created by 51 founding countries, the United Nations now boasts nearly 200 member nations, including The Republic of the Marshall Islands, which was admitted to the UN on September 17, 1991.

In addition to peacekeeping and conflict resolution, the United Nations provides economic development, agricultural development, education, environmental protection, emergency and disaster relief, child survival services, family planning and medical research. In 2001, the United Nations and its secretary-general, Kofi Annan, received the Nobel Peace Prize "for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world."
