On May 8, 2005, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues four new stamps commemorating the 60th Anniversary of V-E Day -- Victory in Europe Day. After six long years, and tens of millions of lives lost, Western Allies formally declared victory over Nazi Germany on May 8, 1945, bringing an end to the Second World War in Europe.

The defeat of German forces followed the death of Adolf Hitler on April 30, 1945, and relentless air assaults by the Allies, which wrought unprecedented destruction on many German cities. With Berlin in ruins, German Army General Alfred Jodl signed for the "unconditional and simultaneous surrender" of all German forces at 2:41 a.m.on May 7, 1945.

The historic document, signed in Rheims, France, was ratified the very next day. Though the war ended in Europe, fighting continued in other theaters, including in the Pacific Theater of Operations, where Japanese troops occupied several atolls in the Marshall Islands, including Kwajalein, Wotje, Maloelap and Jaluit. But after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, Japan surrendered to Allied forces on September 2, 1945.

Designed by noted artist Brian Sanders, the new stamps depict the German surrender at Rheims and V-E Day celebrations in Moscow, at Times Square in New York City and at Buckingham Palace in London.
