On April 2, 2005, the Marshall Islands Postal Service commemorates the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen with new Fairy Tales postage stamps.

From The Swindherd to The Snow Queen, the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen have delighted children of all cultures from around the world, including the Marshall Islands. Born on April 2, 1805, in Odense, Denmark, Andersen published his first volume of fairy tales in 1835, and continued writing until 1872.

In his lifetime, he wrote more than 150 fairy tales and his stories have been translated into over 100 languages. Inspired by characters and plots from legends, history and everyday life, Andersen created stories that showed compassion for the outcast and unfortunate. One of the highest prizes in children's literature is the Hans Christian Andersen Award, presented to only one author and one illustrator every two years. It is presided over by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

Designed by the acclaimed Hungarian artist János Kass, these magical issues depict four of Andersen's popular fairy tales -- The Princess and the Pea, Thumbelina, The Little Mermaid and The Emperor's New Suit.
