C233 Centenary of Rotary
Issue Date: February 23, 2005
On February 23, 2005, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued a new postage stamp commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Rotary International and its
efforts to eradicate polio.
Known throughout the world for its dedication to service and international goodwill, the Rotary was founded in 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney from Chicago,
who envisioned a new kind of club for professionals that would foster fellowship among club members. As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beyond serving the professional and social interests of
club members to serving the community.
In 1985, Rotary made an historic commitment to immunize all the world's children against polio, and set 2005 as the target date for certification of
polio eradication, which is also Rotary's centennial year. Working in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Rotary is
the largest private-sector contributor in the global polio eradication campaign.
Although there are no Rotary clubs in the Marshall Islands, Rotary clubs in Hawaii work in cooperation with
other organizations in the Marshall Islands to meet community needs. On October 29, 2000, the WHO Western Pacific Region, which includes the Marshall Islands, was certified polio-free.
Featuring artwork by acclaimed artist Saul Mandel, this colorful stamp shows a delightful image of children, and the words "Centenary of Rotary International" and "Victory Over Polio."
