On February 14, 2004, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued new postage stamps honoring legendary sailing ships. This issue commemorates the 225th Anniversary of Captain James Cook's final voyage of discovery, which concluded aboard the HMS Resolution in 1779. It also marks the 225th Anniversary of the USS Bonhomme Richard's historic gun battle with the HMS Serapis.

Featuring original artwork by renowned maritime artist Charles Lundgren, these beautiful stamps pay tribute to these two storied ships of the high seas:

HMSResolution: This elegant vessel was selected by Captain Cook for his second and third voyages of discovery. In 1773, it became the first ship to cross the Antarctic Circle. Cook later commanded the Resolution when he discovered the beautiful Hawaiian Islands in 1778. From Hawaii, Cook continued his expedition north in search of the fabled Northwest Passage, and instead discovered Alaska. In 1779, he returned to Hawaii, where he died in Kealakekua Bay.

USS Bonhomme Richard: This legendary ship (whose name in French means "Poor Richard" in honor of Benjamin Franklin) was commanded by John Paul Jones during the American Revolution. On September 23, 1779, it engaged in a dramatic gun battle in the North Sea with the British frigate HMSSerapis. As the two ships sailed daringly close, the British captain asked Jones if he was ready to surrender, to which Jones famously declared, "I have not yet begun to fight!"
