One of the most beautiful regions in the Central Pacific, the Republic of the Marshall Islands has a distinct and illustrious history. Honored and esteemed politicians, government leaders, educators, businessmen and humanitarians have generously contributed their unique talents and skills to improve their communities and to help the Marshall Islands achieve independence and international recognition. Designed by renowned artist Chris Calle, each of these three stamps features a handsome portrait of a celebrated citizen of the Marshall Islands who was instrumental in forming the government, creating business, promoting education or spearheading numerous humanitarian projects.

These stamps feature: Henchi Balos ($13.65) Senator; Tipne Philippo ($3.85) Senator; Oscar deBrum ($0.37) Statesman.

The $13.65 stamp, which will be used on Express Mail, is designed to deter counterfeiters with a security feature that can be verified with the naked eye. Unlike many security features used in stamp production --- particularly in connection with offset stamps --- verifying the authenticity of this stamp does not require special devices. This makes it possible to protect against counterfeit stamps. In this case, the $13.65 denomination appears in pink, but turns white when warmed between fingers. It returns to pink when the temperature drops. This is the first time that thermochromic ink has been used in postage stamp production. Thermochromic inks are planned for use on future Marshallese stamps.
