On July 9, 2001, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued a 57¢ stamp commemorating Atlan Anien, esteemed legislator from the Marshall Islands. The stamp is part of the Great Marshallese series of regular stamps first issued earlier this year, and meets the requirements for the 2-ounce First Class letter rate in effect July 1, 2001.

Designed by renowned artist Chris Calle, this new stamp features a portrait of Atlan Anien, one of the Marshall Islands most honored citizens. Anien spent the early years of his life teaching, but began his career in politics in the 1950s when he was elected Senator, and later Speaker of the House of Assembly. During the 1960s, he served as Secretary of the Congress of the Marshall Islands, and in 1977-78, Anien was one of the framers of the Marshall Islands Constitution.
