R9 Marshallese Sailing Canoes

The legendary Czeslaw Slania, the Royal Court Engraver of Sweden, engraved this Marshall Islands "Sailing Canoe" stamp issued January 19, 2001 at Majuro and simultaneously at the Nordia 2001 Stamp Show in Tucson, Arizona USA. Slania was on hand in Tucson to autograph First Day Covers of the new stamps and to meet collectors visiting the stand of the Swedish Post Office which also sold the stamps and Official First Day Covers by special agreement with the Marshall Islands Postal Service.
Slania has engraved more postage stamps than any other engraver in history. His spectacular 1000th stamp was issued by Sweden on March 17, 2000, and won a place in the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest engraved stamp ever issued.
Herb Kawainui Kane of Hawaii created the original paintings for these new Marshallese stamps which feature the sailing canoes Walap of Enewetak and Walap of Jaluit. Kane (pronounced KAH-ney) is himself a designer of numerous postage stamps, including stamps for the United States, Marshall Islands, French Polynesia and Federated States of Micronesia. A Living Treasure of Hawaii, he is recognized as an artistic and historical authority on Pacific island cultures.
This is one of two of the first engraved stamps issued by the Marshall Islands Postal Service. It was printed by the Swedish Post Office Stamp Printing House in Kista, Sweden, in one color by intaglio.
