On February 7, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issued 12 new stamps celebrating the 2008 Lunar New Year.
Regarded by many Westerners as a combination of mathematical complexities and symbolic tradition, the Chinese lunar calendar is aligned in repeating 12-year cycles. Each year in the cycle is represented by a different animal. According to one legend, the Heavenly Jade Emperor summoned all the world's animals to participate in a great race. The first 12 to finish were chosen to represent each of the different years, assigned by the order in which the animals finished. According to the story, the rat won first place by trickery. Unable to cross a large river near the end of the race, the clever rodent hitched a ride on the back of the ox, another participant. As they neared the far side of the river, the rat jumped forward from the large beast to finish first!
