On March 6, 2008, the Marshall Islands Postal Service issues six new stamps featuring lighthouses. From man's earliest seafaring days, natural landmarks like volcanos and manmade lanterns placed along shorelines guided navigators through troubled waters. From these humble beginnings, lighthouses developed into priceless navigational tools. Through the centuries, the sight of a lighthouse standing guard over a craggy coast has filled the sailor's heart with security. A lonely sentinel, the lighthouse stands stalwart against the onslaught of ocean waves, warning sailors that danger approaches. In ancient times, nature provided sailors of the Mediterranean Sea with such beacons at Vesuvius, Etna and Stromboli. Later, around 280 B.C., the Egyptians erected the gigantic Pharos Lighthouse to mark the city of Alexandria's harbor. Considered one of the seven wonders of the world, this marvel reputedly rose 450 feet. At the top, a raging wood fire guided and welcomed sailors. Featuring artwork by world-renowned artist and stamp designer Howard Koslow, the stamp shows six of America's most beautiful lighthouses: St. Augustine, Old Cape Henry, Cape Lookout, Tybee Island, Morris Island, and Hillsboro Inlet.
