Basil Smith: Natal Hinged Tortoise The smallest of three tortoises that inhabit Swaziland, the Natal Hinged Tortoise measures 150mm in length. Its name is derived from the unique function of its shell. When attacked by predators, the Natal Hinged Tortoise can fold its shell over its hind feet and tail, thereby protecting its most vulnerable area. It is found in the Lubombo Mountains and surrounding foothills.
