Basil Smith: Nile Monitor Lizard Noted for its unusual markings of yellow spots on a dark green background, the Nile Monitor is found across Africa, inhabiting all of Togo. The large lizard is an excellent swimmer, using its wide tail as a rudder. Not surprisingly, much of the Nile Monitor's diet is composed of aquatic inhabitants: fish, snakes, snails and mussels are often eaten. The lizard also eats crocodile eggs with particular relish.
