Toting a bony shell which completely encases his body, a Turtle can be found lazily enjoying the summer sun's warmth on rocks at water's edge. Their slow, deliberate motion gives them the appearance of being seemingly oblivious to the world outside their shells. Their unwillingness to move stems from the fact that Turtles, like all reptiles, are cold-blooded, and must rely on the Sun's rays for heat and energy. Moreover, Turtles are totally deaf, yet are quite aware of their surroundings; their keen eyesight and sense of smell are better developed than man's. So, when danger threatens, a Turtle can respond quickly by pulling almost all of itself securely inside its shell for protection. Should a Turtle sustain an injury, it has a remarkable ability to heal itself. They are also extraordinarily long-lived in the wild. Some Turtles have been known to live for more than one hundred fifty years! Long one of man's favorite pets, Turtles have continued to fascinate and impress man with their abilities to easily reorient and adapt as well as learn and remember new behavior patterns.
