The vast area south of the Sahara Desert is the kingdom of the Tortoises. Even barren, dry countries like South-West Africa are home to these creatures with armour-plated shells. This is the perfect home for the Angulate Tortoise for it favors a dry climate and prefers to live on grassy steppes like those of South-West Africa. This Tortoise is a vegetarian. He munches on the grasses of his dry home as he slowly makes his way across the countryside. In the very driest time of year, the Angulate Tortoise becomes dormanant and eats little, if any, food. Howver, no season in most of South-West Africa is very wet, for the country's coastal regions average only about two inches of rain a year and in other areas of the South only six inches of rain fall anually. The country's Northeast section fares a little better, since it receives about twenty-two inches of rain a year. But, wherever he lives in South-West Africa, the Angulate Tortoise spends part of each day basking in the warm African sunshine. As the sun beats down on his hard, protective shell, the Tortoise is the picture of contentment. If the air temperatrues rises above a certain point, the Angulate Tortoise will increases his activity, abandoning his comfortable spot on the warm sand. Like all reptiles, he is intolerant of extremely high temperatures. The Angulate Tortoise lives in a climate and in a terrain that suits his lifestyle perfectly. This landscape that is inhospitable to man is the ideal home of this slow-moving creature.
