Chris Calle: Sonoran Green Toad
The world's toad species survive in diverse habitats, from moist tropical rainforests to arid deserts, and many have similar characteristics, including warty skin, short legs and horny projections on their hind feet. Although toads primarily live a terrestrial life, they must seek pools and ponds to mate and lay their eggs. The Sonoran Green Toad is indigenous to North America and is found from south-central Arizona to west-central Sonora, where it inhabits mesquite grasslands and creosote bush flats. It has adapted itself to live in the desert by spending most of its time underground. This species is classified Bufo retiformis and is brightly colored with green to greenish-yellow skin with reticulations or spots of black or brown on the back and legs. The belly is white. As soon as the summer rains begin, the toads aggregate in puddles for breeding, and the tadpoles develop very quickly before the water evaporates again. Like all Bufo species, the male Sonoran Green Toad has rudimentary ovaries that can become functional if the testes are damaged or removed. Little is known about the population size of this species, although it seems that the Sonoran Green Toad has been extending its range because of increased irrigation in some areas. Because it was in demand by amateur collectors and populations were declining, the species was listed as threatened in 1975. Fortunately, trade no longer forms a threat to the survival of the Sonoran Green Toad and it was removed from the list in May 2000.
