Chris Calle: Reconstructed Santa Maria Columbus' three ships, the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa Maria, cast off from the Spanish port of Palos on August 3, 1492. Nine weeks later, on October 12, a sailor cried "Land!" Later that day, Columbus claimed the island for Spain's king and queen and named it San Salvador. For the next three months, Columbus and his tiny fleet explored the surrounding area. But on Christmas Day, the Santa Maria shipwrecked off a coral reef. Thus in January of 1493 the Niña and the Pinta set sail for home without the admiral's beloved flagship. A square-sailed version of the ill-fated Santa Maria was reproduced in the 1980s. This painting was originally published on The Republic of the Marshall Islands 50¢ Reconstructed Santa Maria "Reaching For New Horizons" stamp issued May 23, 1992.
