Gene Jarvis: Hairy-nosed Wombat While Australia may be best known for its beautiful port cities, it is the country's wonderful variety of wildlife which holds the greatest fascination for many people. With just a small amount of luck one may watch a Stick Nest Rat build his nest, a Bilby poke his head out of his burrow to investigate passers-by, or a Koala lounge comfortably in the fork of a tree. A fortunate person may even glimpse a Platypus or a sleek, majestic Tasmanian Tiger. However, only the knowledgeable observer will be able to locate and watch the Hairy-nosed Wombat. This creature is rare and has only been recorded in three restricted localities. He is a strong animal with powerful legs and claws that are well adapted for digging. The animal's soft, silky hair is brown and his head is very broad with relatively long, slightly pointed ears, his muzzle is covered with short, brown hair, which earned him his name, Hairy-nosed Wombat. This endearing creature of the Australian wilderness is in danger of extinction. The only known colony of this species is at Epping Forest near Clermont in Queensland. Wombats' burrows are in groups among clumps of trees at the edge of a shallow gully. About one hundred burrow entrances showing signs of Wombat activity were recently recorded. However, the number of Wombats in the colony is unknown since an animal may use more than one burrow. It is vital that the Hairy-nosed Wombat be saved from extinction for he is an interesting representative of Australian wildlife.
