Lawrence Tibbett was born on November 16, 1896, in Bakersfield, California. In high school he sang in glee club and performed in several plays, desiring to pursue an acting career. He began performing in Los Angeles as an actor and a church singer. While there, he studied voice with Basil Ruysdael. He later moved to New York City where he continued voice study with Frank La Forge. In 1923, Tibbett made his operatic debut at the Metropolitan Opera in Mussorgky's Boris Godunov. It wasn't until his outstanding performance in Verdi's Falstaff in 1925, that he achieved his first major success. A leading baritone, Tibbett continued with the Metropolitan Opera for 27 seasons. In 1937, he made his debut in Europe, performing Goossens' new opera, Don Juan de Manara. His repertoire includes several American operas such as Gruenberg's The Emperor Jones, Hanson's Merry Mount, Hageman's Caponsacchi, as well as operas by Deems Taylor, The King's Henchman and Peter Ibbetson. Tibbett was an advocate for translating foreign operas into English for American audiences. He was one of the founders and the first president of the American Music Guild of Musical Artists. From 1940 to 1945, he served as president of the American Federation of Radio Artists. The first opera singer to appear in motion pictures, his films include The Rogue Song, New Moon and The Southerner. In 1950, he made his last appearance at the Metropolitan performing in Mussorgsky's Khovanschina. Tibbett died on July 15, 1960, in New York City.
