Mark Schuler: Artturi Virtanen From the early years of his career, Artturi Virtanen insisted that his scientific research always serve a practical end. And, it was the achievements gained through this determination that later vaulted him to his position as a world-renowned chemist. In the early years of his career, Virtanen worked tirelessly, performing experiment after experiment, laying the groundwork for his scientific achievements. His diligence gained him notoriety thoughtout Finland's scientific community, and he was offered the position as director of the Valio Finnish Cooperative Dairy Association. Later, in 1931, he assumed the respected job as director of the Biochemical Research Institute at Helsinki. However, his real scientific breakthrough came while he served as professor of biochemistry at the University of Helsinki from 1939 to 1948. While at the University he toiled relentlessly, making discoveries that advanced both agricultural and nutritive science. He pioneered a method of preserving green fodder in storage by adding certain acids to it to prevent deterioration. This scientific milestone, the premier achievement of his career, was christened the AIV method after Virtanen's initials. For his brilliant scientific contributions, Virtanen won the coveted Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1945. A scientific giant of his day, Virtanen enjoyed a rewarding career that included a position as President of the Academy of Finland. In 1973, he died, leaving behind a legacy of achievement that is the pride of Finland.
