Tom McNeely: Kosrae Native Costume
Artist: Tom McNeely
Surrounded by lush expanses of colorful vegetation, the people of the Federated States of Micronesia cleverly employ this natural bounty to fulfill many needs. One of the most creative uses for this abundant flora is evident in Micronesian native costumes. Skilled hands fashion beautiful headdresses, leis and skirts from the fibers of indigenous plants such as the banana and hibiscus. Vibrant hues of red and yellow dominate many of the intricate designs. This representative of Kosrae is bedecked in flowers. The backdrop of this handsome painting displays a sailing canoe gliding across Kosraean waters.
This painting originally appeared on the Federated States of Micronesia 29¢ Native Costumes - Kosrae stamp issued March 31, 1994.
