Leonora Box: Flowers of the Cook Islands The ribbons in this gorgeously vivid wedding bouquet bear the official colors of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. Eight blossoms of the Cook Islands grace the bouquet. Called "Shoeflower" because of its use as a shoe polish, the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis can be found on islands throughout the Pacific. The brilliant scarlet blossoms of the African Tulip Tree provide a striking contrast to the dull greens and browns of the forest. Bougainvillea, named for Louis de Bougainville, the first Frenchman to cross the Pacific, are robust shrubs that owe their color to bright leaf bracts rather than the flowers. Finger-like rows of Banana blossoms give way to a familiar South Pacific fruit. The trumpet-shaped blossoms of the Arum Lily, much valued by gardeners, grow wild on the Cook Islands. The "lanterns" of the beautiful Chinese Lantern open to reveal a round, orange-red berry. Forget-me-nots are petite treasures, sometimes obscured by the underbrush, but a careful observer can find them. The Lantana camara, a tropical shrub, sports blossoms which deepen in color with age, into orange or red.
